Luxury accommodation for weddings at Deene Park, Kirby Hall and Rockingham Castle
Some of the most beautiful wedding venues in England sit within a few miles of Bulwick. Almost none of them have anywhere to sleep.
The Shambles was restored as a place to stay rather than a place to get married — which turns out to be exactly what's missing around here. It's a two-bedroom cottage, finished to a standard that holds up on the morning of a wedding, two miles from Deene Park and within easy reach of everywhere else.
Why it works for a wedding weekend
The morning matters more than the night. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms and two separate reception rooms mean hair and make-up can happen in one room while everyone else has breakfast in another. Nobody is queuing for a mirror.
It photographs well. Stone walls, sash windows, hand-printed textiles, good natural light. The getting-ready photographs are often the ones couples keep, and a hotel room rarely gives you them.
Parking for two cars, right by the door. Dresses, flowers, cases, and whatever else needs moving in and out without a car park walk.
It's quiet. Bulwick is a small stone village on the Northamptonshire and Rutland border. The night before a wedding, that's worth a great deal.
The venues nearby
Deene Park — approx. 2 miles
The closest of them, and the reason most of our wedding guests find us. Deene Park hosts a small number of weddings each year across the Walled Garden, the Lakeside and Dibbins Wood — a Grade I listed house set in 500 acres of parkland, with a minimum of 60 guests and space for up to 400.
It's a marquee venue, which means accommodation is arranged separately. We're a five-minute drive from the gates.
Kirby Hall — approx. 4 miles
An Elizabethan house in the care of English Heritage, roofless in parts and extraordinary because of it. Licensed for ceremonies, with the great hall and the gardens as the setting.
Rockingham Castle — approx. 7 miles
Built by William the Conqueror on a ridge overlooking five counties, and a private family home for over 450 years. One of the most striking wedding settings in the East Midlands.
Fineshade and Wakerley — approx. 3 miles
Woodland and tipi weddings in ancient forest, a few minutes up the road.
Stamford and the Welland Valley — approx. 10 miles
For couples marrying in Stamford itself, or at one of the villages along the valley, we're a short and very pretty drive away.
Who tends to book
The bride and bridal party, for the night before and the morning of — the most common booking by some margin.
Parents of the couple, who want somewhere calm and comfortable rather than a chain hotel in Corby.
Couples themselves, for the night after, or for a few days either side.
Guests travelling a distance who'd rather make a weekend of it than drive home.
